Absolutely fabulous, tastes just like the brown bread I had on my trip to Boston! You can also mix in dried fruit if you like.

Boston Brown Bread
Absolutely fabulous, tastes just like the brown bread I had on my trip to Boston! You can also mix in dried fruit if you like.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ⅔ cup firmly packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup molasses
- 2 cups buttermilk
- ½ cup dried cranberries Optional
- ½ cup raisins Optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, knocking out excess flour.
- Mix whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar together in a large bowl. Mix in molasses and buttermilk until just combined. Fold in cranberries and raisins if using. Pour batter into prepared pan.
- Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes, and then remove from pan. Cool completely before slicing.
